چکیده

Thresholds defined on the level and change in the HHI (HerfindahlHirschmann Index) applied to market shares seem to be the main instrument to select notified mergers for investigation in both the EU and US. We question the use of such a selection rule in differentiated products industries. We propose the use of a structural approach to apply HHI thresholds based on profit shares rather than market shares. We illustrate our point using product data for Retail Carbonated Soft Drinks (Price, Market Share and Characteristics). We estimate company (product) mark-ups consistent with a structural model of equilibrium, using demand primitives from a Nested Logit model and a Random Coefficient model. We provide an example where the HHI thresholds based on profit shares identify potentially damaging mergers not captured by applying thresholds to output shares, or conversely, identify mergers of no concern that would be selected on the basis of output shares.

Advertising and endogenous exit in a di ff erentiated duopoly ∗

In this paper we consider a duopoly two-stage duopoly where firms first decide whether to invest in advertising and then compete in prices. Advertising has two effects: a market enlargement for both firms and a predatory gain for the investing firm only. Both symmetric and asymmetric equilibria may arise. The two most interesting cases are a coordination game where both firms investing and non-...

Di ff erentiation , Asymmetric Information and International Mergers

Information asymmetry creates value and incentives for firms from different countries to merge. To demonstrate this point, we develop a model of international trade under oligopolistic competition and asymmetric information, in which domestic firms are informed of the local market demands, but foreign firms are not. By emphasizing two features of a merger between a domestic firm and a foreign f...

Product Repositioning in Di¤erentiated Product Industries: The Case of Format Switching in the Commercial Radio Industry

This paper estimates a dynamic model of product repositioning in di¤erentiated product markets using data from the broadcast radio industry. The feasibility of repositioning can play an important role in determining the medium and long-run e¤ects of demand shocks, mergers and many kinds of policy intervention. The paper extends techniques for estimating dynamic oligopoly models to a setting wit...

Di erentiated Products Demand Systems from a Combination of Micro and Macro Data : Autos Again 1

In this paper, we exploit new sources of data to estimate a detailed product-level demand system for new passenger vehicles. We use three data sources: on products, on the U.S. population of households and on the match between households and product choices. We show that the householdchoice data solves some, but not all, of the traditional problems in estimating di erentiated products demand sy...

Simulating Merger E ects Among Capacity-Constrained Firms

In this paper, we simulate the e ects of mergers in an industry of rms facing capacity constraints. In equilibrium, each rm prices where marginal revenue equals marginal cost or, if the capacity constraint is binding, where expected demand equals capacity. We develop an algorithm to compute Nash equilibrium. Capacity constraints on the merged rms attenuate merger e ects, and capacity constraint...
